Extreme E, the all-electric off-road racing series, has introduced the new "Pioneer 25" race car for its planned transition to hydrogen power in 2025.

The car is designed and manufactured by Spark Racing Technology and equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell from Symbio, Extreme H’s official fuel cell provider, and has undergone a testing program to prepare for its debut campaign, according to the series.

Symbio will provide a 75kW hydrogen fuel cell, replacing the battery as the principal energy source. The hydrogen fuel cell powers the battery pack that is produced and supported trackside by Fortescue ZERO.

The Pioneer 25’s peak 550-hp output is capable of firing the 4,850-lb. car from 0-60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds and scale grades of up to 130%.

Each Pioneer 25 raced in Extreme H uses a common package of standardized parts from Spark Racing Technology. One open area for teams is the ability to redesign front and rear bodywork and lights in order to replicate the look of everyday car models.

The Pioneer 25 will undergo its first public test at Extreme E’s Hydro X Prix in Scotland, July 13-14.
